My Digital Path moves into the next stage with Twacks a Wealthy Affiliate. The next few installments are going to seem like a bit of a review for the Wealthy Affiliate Platform. That’s not my intention but you know how it is when you become impassioned with something. It’s not obsession, though I have a tendency towards that, it’s just that it took me by surprise.
What surprised me was the fact that I found something in me that had been dormant since my school-days. Writing.
Having A Look around
I signed up on the 22nd January..just an e-mail, nothing more than that. That in itself gave me access to the entire Wealthy Affiliate Platform. Nothing was off limits. A brilliant concept if you think about it. Like car dealerships letting you borrow a car you might like, so you can test it out before you buy. I wonder what the percentages are like for those that try something out first and then actually buy. Maybe quite high, I’m not sure.
It was like walking into company who was hoping you’d join them…all that was missing was coffee and a plate of biscuits. My wife described it as ‘Your Facebook’ That might not sound great to some but the sentiment was there. You had your own profile page..write bit about yourself and put a few pictures up, nothing fancy, just an introduction to who you were.
Twack was in. Mini-bio written and what is known as a Gravatar, created. That is a small picture/design that follows you round where ever you leave a comment or write something.
There was a main dashboard that showed everything that was going on and in the same way as some social media platforms you could see what other members were doing, as long as you were following them. That was how you built up your network. If you ‘hovered’ on someones profile picture/gravatar then a snippet of their bio would come up with a place for you to leave a message and the option to follow them. The more members that you follow and they in turn follow you back, the more exposure anything you do, gets.
That was the big difference I found between the Wealthy Affiliate site and anything else…the welcome. I had loads of messages left on my profile page..Hi, welcome, great to have you here and so on. OK, so this is weird, I thought. There were loads of offers of help also.
I rolled with it and made connections right from the start. I’m not sure if you’ve picked up from my other posts but I’m not the most sociable of people. I’ve never been one for all the social media stuff. I had decided to give this one a go though so I went right outside my comfort zone and went for it. What a revelation.
Due to fact that everyone I encountered, without exception, was open and genuine, I felt more at ease about putting myself out there. I hadn’t written anything of any consequence for many years yet I had a feeling that whatever I wrote would be accepted and not ridiculed. I’d best start coming up with some ideas.
Look what I’ve got
Take a deep breath and a seat. You don’t quite realise what you’ve got until it’s staring you in the face… All the hype you read about taking the plunge. Well, to be fair, it wasn’t even a plunge more of a gentle wade with some arm bands on. I was on a ‘freebie’ remember. Well that ‘gratis’ also included two websites..that’s right, two.
Within the Wealthy Affiliate Platform there is Siterubix.com. This is a free hosting facility and as a ‘free starter’ member you have the option of creating two ‘free’ websites..Now that’s outstanding. What do I do with them ?
In all honesty I hadn’t really given it much thought. I’d signed up to have a look round, not really sure what to expect. Now I had the opportunity to create two websites and just so you know, this is one of them.
Training As Well
Ever the caring consortium of internet welfarers, the team at Wealthy Affiliate provide training…not just any training. There are two courses available. One is called ‘Boot Camp’ and is only up for grabs as a fully paid up member…the other is the OEC which is the Online Entrepreneur Certification. This one guides you through the process of building a website and making it successful. It’s a proper ‘How to’ guide from start to finish. A total of five levels with ten lessons in each.
As a free starter you get access to the first level and all the ten lessons that come with it. Well, I was all over it. Not least because I hadn’t got a clue where to start…and I wanted to have my very own website..up and running asap.
The best part ? The training is designed for ‘us beginners’ that’s the whole point. Most of us might think about doing something online but never have the courage to go through with it, why ? Probably because we think it will be to complicated or expensive..you used to have to get someone to build you a website..not anymore…You still have to decide what to put in it. What do we write about. How do we get people to come to our site….there is an endless list…luckily, the training covers it. Kyle and Carson, the founders and owners, were where we are now…so they know what it takes.
A Website Is Born
So I joined on the Tuesday. By Wednesday, I had chosen a ‘Theme’ and on Thursday my website was up and running…a little sparse but ‘out there’ all the same. When you become a fully paid up member you get the choice of thousands of websites ‘themes’…as a starter you get about twelve options…this is a good thing, or at least it was for me. Too much choice makes the decision so much harder… I chose the one your in at the moment and it still suits me just fine.
In this time I had also managed to put together a rough plan of how I wanted the website to ‘build out’ as those in the know, put it. Making the bulk of the site, about my life and the journey I have been on, gave me plenty of subject matter. Who can’t find something to talk about in regard to themselves.
So far, so good. All the promises thus made had come through. I had a working website that was ready and waiting for me to add content. In the meantime I had some other decisions to make. I could continue as a ‘free starter’ and carry on with creating my website, which was alright but really what I had in mind. I only had a few days left though and once the initial trial was over you lost all the extra stuff like, blogging, comments and live chat..probably some other things as well that I hadn’t discovered yet. Or…..
I could sign up there and then or at least within the first week and get a discount on the first month. If I joined up after the first week the monthly premium was just as it would be at any other time.
The other option was to take out either the six monthly or annual subscription. Both are discounted so worth looking at. I had plenty to think about but I had the beginnings of a plan in my mind, on how to proceed. In the next installment I’ll tell you how I did continue, in a way that really makes the choice far easier.
I have to say, at this point I was barely keeping a lid on my excitement. All I could see in front of me was opportunity. However, I wanted to make sure that if I did make a commitment it was all viable…that meant funding and letting those at home know that I was about to start devoting large chunks of time to being sat in front of a computer.
So I’ll wrap this section up and once again thank you for taking the time to read my post. If you have any questions or would just like to leave a comment you can do so below.
